Big win for Serena

Top-seeded Serena Williams pummelled  fellow WTA heavy-hitter Samantha Stosur 6-0, 6-2 in second-round action at the Rogers Cup in Montreal Wednesday night. Stosur, who most famously beat Williams to win the 2011 US Open, had no answers this time around, and was squarely on the receiving end of a dominant onslaught lasting just under an hour.

Williams did not face a single break point, and fired ten aces in a match briefly interrupted by rain. She then drew applause from the Centre Court audience by conducting her post-match on-court interview in French. Her older sister Venus Williams also advanced, defeating qualifier Yulia Putintseva of Russia.

All told, it was a bad night for Australia. In the second night match on centre court, Stosur’s  countrywoman Casey Dellacqua lost a battle of the lefties against the Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova. The second-seeded Kvitova is the reigning Wimbledon champion and the 2012 Rogers Cup champion (the last time the event was held in Montreal) and was largely unchallenged by the Aussie, though Dellacqua did manage one break in four chances.

Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic and Coco Vandeweghe of the United States played the final match of the evening on Court 1.
