Honda Indy Toronto – Day 3

Sunday- July 20th, 2014 – Honda Indy Toronto Verizon IndyCar Series Double-Header

Toronto, ON – A dramatic and exciting race weekend which featured an unprecedented same day double-header due to rain delays and race cancellations by officials on Saturday for Race 1 of the series. The adrenaline was high for both drivers and fans.

Initially overlooked drivers, Sebastien Bourdais and Mike Conway came out on top winning Race One and Two at Exhibition Place.

Both races were shorted to 65 laps or 80 minutes due to Saturday’s rain, which cancelled the initial first race and the afternoon qualifier for Sunday’s Race 2.

Thirty-five year old, Bourdais of France, who hadn’t won a race in six years, led all but seven laps in Sunday morning’s race to win from pole. Mike Conway, a seasoned road and street competitor, finished 15th in the opening race.

The 2nd and afternoon race was indeed a battle of strategy, smarts and experience between the Penske teammates and championship contenders Will Power and Helio Castroneves. But both went to the pits for new tires after drizzling rain hit the track, which allowed Conway to take the lead for the first time on lap 51 and then onto winning the race.

The lone Canadian car and favored driver, Oakville-native James Hinchcliffe never had a chance at a trophy. He slid into a tire barrier during the race and had to settle for 18th place.

The biggest winner of the weekend who didn’t take a checkered flag was Brazilian, Tony Kanaan who finished third in the first race and second in the afternoon…
