This match saw a slow start from Sharapova, never quite finding her range, from the base line or serve. Too many unforced errors from Sharapova with Suarez Navarro the more consistent of the two, but with fewer winners in her game. In short order Suarez Navarro takes the opener 6-2.
The opening of the second set again saw errors from Sharapova, going 0-2 down but more aggressive hitting results in Sharapova clawing a break back. Suarez Navarro’s backhand comes to her rescue, pushing Sharapova wide, mixing slice and top spin.
The match really coming alive in the second set with both players hitting better depth, longer rallies and going for winners.
Sharapova finally makes the break to lead 5-4, and takes a comfortable hold to tie the match.
An even start in the third, with 3 holds, each player serving well, but then the Sharapova serve is broken, for a 3-1 lead to Suarez Navarro. A compelling 5th game saw 40-0 slip for Suarez Navarro, and Sharapova breaks right back. Rain then stopped play for a second time, and on resumption Sharapova was broken, for a 4-2 lead for the Spaniard. A well fought hold for Suarez Navarro saw Sharapova serve to stay in the match. A brave game saw Sharapova save one match point, but a miss hit on the second saw Suarez Navarro seal a deserved victory.
