A beautiful weekend at CTMP was had by all with the sound of motorcycle engines permeating the air. It was a hot and sunny weekend for the large crowd in attendance who got to enjoy some very exciting motorcycle races, stunt driving shows, a movie night and autograph sessions with the riders.
In attendance as, Grand Marshall was the legendary Floridian motorcycle racer John Long, who won Canada’s very first SuperBike race in 1978. Formerly called Mosport, the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (CTMP) track hosted the Molson Diamond Motorcycle Grand Prix of Canada, where Long won the SuperBike race on his G.S Tuning BMW R90S.
MOPAR PRO SUPERBIKE
CSBK Championship leader Jordan Szoke won his 13th CSBK title over the weekend with a third-place finish in Saturday’s race and then clinching the title on Sunday with a fourth-place finish.
Sunday’s race was a very exciting race with #1 Szoke, #86 Ben Young and the #42 bike of Kenny Reidmann riding all 20 laps in a tight pack of three waiting for someone to make a tiny mistake.
The #14 of Samuel Trepanier battled from the 9th position to catch up to the pack and then pass #1 Szoke in the final laps to take the last podium spot.
This was the first ever SuperBike victory for Kenny Riedmann who had a great weekend with a second-place podium in the Saturday race as well. In mirror like fashion, Saturday’s race was won by #86 Ben Young which was his very first SuperBike win and Ben finished second in the Sunday race.
Grand Marshall John Long commented that the Sunday race was “the best SuperBike race he has ever seen”
Szoke was plagued with mechanical issues all weekend with his BMW Motorrad S1000RR, but by finishing in the 4th position in Sunday’s race, he had enough points to secure his “Baker’s Dozen” 13th CSBK crown.
LIQUI-MOLI PRO SPORT BIKE
Defending series champion, Peterborough’s Tomas Casas riding the #1 Yamaha YZF-R6 had a fabulous weekend at his home track. He won the tightly contested Saturday race clinching the championship in the process with #76 Louis Raffa finishing second and #82 David Mackay finishing third. In the Sunday race, the 19-year-old jumped into a quick lead and never looked back. The battle was for the second position with #14 Mitch Card taking it from the #24 of Sebastien Tremblay by 0.429 of a second. Mitch Card on the #14 Yamaha YZF-R6 had a great comeback on Sunday after crashing his bike in Saturday’s race.
MAGNETI MARELLI AMATEUR SUPERBIKE
Series leader Luc LaBranche clinched the championship over the weekend on his #888 Yamaha YZF-R1 with a close victory of 0.227 of a second on Saturday over #905 Michael Van Ek with the #32 of Pascal Bastien taking the third position. Luc had a third-place podium finish in the Sunday race with Van Ek on his BMW S1000RR taking the win and #140 Andrew Haick finishing in second place. Crowd favorite #56 Amy Szoke who was fifth in the championship points battle drove her BMW S1000RR to a 13th place finishes on both days.
PARTS CANADA AMATEUR SPORTS BIKE
Luc LaBranche came from behind to capture the championship and is the first dual champion (also winning the Amateur SuperBike series) in a few years. Riding his #888 YZF-R6, he beat out 16-year-old Phnom Nicolas Meunier to finish 4 points ahead in the championship. Meunier riding the #12 Kawasaki ZX-6R Ninja is the youngest and most exciting rider since Jordan Szoke.
In Saturday’s race #9 Danny Cayer won, with the #888 of Luc LaBranche taking the second spot and Meunier took the last podium position with a third place. On Sunday #888 Luc LaBranche won the race to clinch the championship with #69 Christian Allard taking second and #12 Nicolas Meunier taking the third position for the second day in a row and finishing a very close second in the championship 4 points behind LaBranche. All in all, this has been an amazing season for the 16 year old Meunier who will go pro next year.
AMATEUR LIGHTWEIGHT SPORT BIKE
In its inaugural season, #811 Jake LeClair has dominated the field and was leading the championship standings by 87 points going into the weekend. Unfortunately, Jake crashed in the Saturday race, opening the door for #12 Keegan Gaudet to win the race with #814 Connor Campbell second and #36 Jason Colangelo third. Jake won Sunday’s race on his Yamaha RZF-R3 to claim the series championship with #814 Connor Campbell taking second place for the second day in a row and Jake’s younger brother Ben LeClair taking the last spot on the podium on his Yamaha RZF-R3.
JORDAN SZOKE EXTREME SHOW
This crowd favorite did not disappoint, as motocross riders thrilled the crowd with freestyle jumps and some stunt driving. Fans young and old enjoyed the high-flying stunts in one of the many shows held on the Saturday and Sunday.
